How Much Does It Cost to Resize a Ring in the UK? 2026 Price Guide

Resizing a ring in the UK typically costs between £50 and £200, but most jewellers won't tell you the exact price until they've seen your ring.

At our Bloomsbury workshop, we do it differently. Resizing a plain wedding band costs £89, and resizing any other ring down, in silver, gold or platinum -costs £99, fixed. If your ring needs to go up the its £99 plus the cost of the metal we add.  If your ring needs to be gold or Rhodium plated after resizing that will be an additional £69.

Why do ring resizing prices vary so much in the UK?

If you've been quoted anywhere from £40 to £250 for the same ring, you're not imagining it. Five things drive the difference.

Sizing down vs sizing up 

Making a ring smaller means removing a section of metal, closing the gap and soldering or laser-welding the join — no new metal is needed, so it's usually the cheaper direction.

Making a ring larger works one of two ways. For small increases, the band can sometimes be stretched. For bigger jumps, the jeweller cuts the band and adds a piece of matching metal. That added metal is where costs climb. Half a size up in 9ct gold might add very little, but two sizes up in platinum means a meaningful amount of one of the most expensive metals in the workshop.  

2. The metal

9ct and 18ct gold (yellow, white, rose) — the bread and butter of resizing. Straightforward for an experienced goldsmith.

Platinum — a higher melting point and different working properties mean platinum needs specific skills and equipment. Some high-street jewellers charge a premium or send platinum work away; we resize platinum in-house at the same £99. 

Silver — inexpensive as a metal, but it conducts heat quickly and can be unforgiving around gemstones, so it still needs a careful hand.

White gold — resizes like any gold, but the join and polish will reveal the natural warm tone beneath the original rhodium plating, which is why we offer re-plating for £69 at the same appointment.

Tungsten, titanium and ceramic — these generally cannot be resized at any price. The materials are too hard (or too brittle) to cut and rejoin. If a ring in one of these materials no longer fits, the usual answer is a replacement. 

3. Gemstones and settings A plain band is the simplest job in the workshop — which is why we price it separately at £89. Once stones are involved, the goldsmith has to protect them from heat and pressure while working, and check every setting afterwards.

Solitaires with a plain shank are usually straightforward. Diamond-set shoulders need more care, as stones sit closer to the join. Heat-sensitive stones (emeralds, opals, pearls) may need to be removed and reset, or protected during work.

Full eternity rings with stones running the whole way around , often can't be conventionally resized at all, because there's no plain metal to cut. Options exist, but they're specialist jobs, which is why we quote eternity rings individually. 

4. Where you take it

The same resize can be priced very differently depending on the type of business: High-street chains often route resizing through central workshops or care-package pricing, with typical turnarounds of one to two weeks.

Repair counters and multi-service shops can be cheap, but the work is frequently sent away, and complex or high-value rings may be declined.

Hatton Garden and central London workshops offer genuine goldsmith expertise, but at London workshop prices — standard resizes from around £120–£170 with several days' turnaround, and same-day services commonly from £180 to £270. Independent workshops like ours do the work in-house, in front of you, with the goldsmith who takes responsibility for it. Our while-you-wait resize at £119 costs less than most London same-day services — and you don't have to leave your ring behind. 

5. Speed Across the UK, "same day" is normally the premium option — some London workshops charge £100 or more on top of their standard price for it. Because our workshop is set up for while-you-wait appointments as the standard service, speed isn't an upgrade here; it's just how we work. You book, we measure your finger, confirm the price, and you leave an hour later with a ring that fits.

What's actually included (and what to check when comparing quotes) A cheap headline price can grow. When you compare quotes, check whether these are included: Professional polish — a resize should leave the ring looking better than it arrived, not just smaller or larger. Included in all our prices.

An invisible join — properly soldered or laser-welded and finished, the join should be undetectable. If a jeweller can't guarantee that, keep looking. Stone and setting check — every setting should be inspected after work near stones.

Re-plating (white gold) — Ours is £69, done in the same appointment.

Documentation — we provide a written ring resizing record with every job, useful for insurance and for any future jeweller who works on the ring. 

Insurance and guarantee — confirm the workshop is insured for your ring while it's in their care. We are, and our work is guaranteed.

Is resizing worth it — or should you replace the ring? For almost any gold, silver or platinum ring, resizing is dramatically cheaper than replacing it, and it preserves the original ring — which matters enormously for wedding rings, engagement rings and heirlooms.

Consider alternatives only when: The ring is tungsten, titanium or ceramic (it can't be resized).

The size change is extreme — more than two or three sizes can distort some designs, and occasionally a remake is the better route. We'll tell you honestly if that's the case.

The ring is inexpensive fashion jewellery worth less than the resize itself. Temporary fixes like silicone ring adjusters exist, but they're a stopgap: they trap moisture and soap against your skin, they look like what they are, and they solve nothing permanently. If a precious ring doesn't fit, resize it once, properly.

How our while-you-wait resizing appointment works. Book online and choose the service that matches your ring — plain band (£89), any other ring (£99), or two rings (£180). We measure your finger at the start of your appointment and agree the exact target size. Finger size changes with temperature and time of day, so measuring in person beats guessing. 

We confirm the price before any work begins. For the overwhelming majority of rings, it's the fixed price you booked.  The work happens in our Bloomsbury workshop, you're welcome to stay and see your ring being worked on, look at the hallmarks under the loupe, and try the ring on until the fit is right. How much does it cost to resize a ring in the UK? Typically £50–£200 depending on the ring and the jeweller. At our London workshop, a plain wedding band costs £89 and any other ring costs £99, resized while you wait.

Is it cheaper to make a ring smaller or bigger? Smaller is usually the cheaper direction, because no new metal is added. Sizing up by more than about half a size means adding precious metal, which can increase the cost. 

How much does it cost to resize a platinum ring? Many jewellers charge a premium for platinum. We resize platinum rings in-house for the same £99 as gold and silver. 

Does resizing damage a ring? Not when done properly. A skilled goldsmith leaves a seamless, invisible join and checks every stone setting afterwards. Poor-quality resizing — visible joins, thinned bands, loosened stones — is why it's worth choosing a workshop rather than the cheapest counter.

How long does ring resizing take? At most UK jewellers, one to three weeks. At our workshop, most rings are resized during a single one-hour appointment while you wait. 

How many sizes can a ring be resized? Most rings can move up or down by around two sizes without issue. Larger changes are often possible but depend on the design — we'll assess your ring and advise before starting.

Can all rings be resized? Most gold, silver and platinum rings can. Tungsten, titanium and ceramic rings can't. Full eternity rings and some antique or intricately patterned rings need specialist assessment — check whether your ring can be resized
