Pear cut diamonds lend themselves beautifully and effortlessly to many kinds of the engagement ring design.

Pear cut diamond solitaire

A solitaire is still the most popular type of design for an engagement ring and this simple, classic design that features a single diamond on a metal band accommodates a pear cut diamond as well, if not better than any other cut of diamond.

Normally, a pear-cut diamond solitaire ring will have 3 claws, two at the base of the diamond and one at the top. The claw at the top should be in a V shape to best hold and protect the tip of the stone. Large stones, for instance, a 5 or 6ct diamond might have an extra claw at the base of the diamond.

If claws aren’t your thing then you can opt for a rub over setting, this will mean that metal covers the edge of the stone all the way around.

The band itself can be made of gold or platinum and be either plain or engraved and either straight or shaped. Shaped bands are popular for pear cut solitaires as they follow the shape of the diamond.

Adding diamonds to the side of your pear cut centre stone can be a great way to add sparkle to your ring. Typically, round cut diamonds are set from the where the centre stone meets the band to halfway down, though you can have them set 3 quarters or all the way around.

There are different types of setting for these side stones. Grain set, claw set and channel set are the most practical and most popular, all these types of settings are for round diamonds.

As well as round brilliant cut diamonds, princess cut or baguette-cut diamonds can be used as shoulder stones though the only way to set these stones is in a Chanel.

Pear cut halo ring

A halo ring has a row of diamonds that surround the centre stone, like the halo of an angel. The stones that surround the main stone are smaller than the main stone and are almost always round diamonds. You can get princess cut or baguette-cut diamonds but these will have to be specially cut to fit the size of your centre stone which pushes up the price. A lot.

Again, the stone can be set in different styles of setting, like a grain or claw set and the central stone can be either a claw set or a rub over.

Double halo rings have two rows of diamonds surrounding the centre stone.

We specialise in pear cut diamonds because we believe they are the most beautiful of all diamond cuts and that they offer great value compared to other diamond cuts. We did some research recently which shows a diamond that is the same size, colour and clarity will be approximately ⅓ cheaper if it is a pear cut compared to a round brilliant.

Being a specialist in one cut of diamond allows us to focus on sourcing the best examples of pear cut diamonds we can and conduct time-consuming research that we just wouldn’t be able to do if we spread your resources across the many different cuts of diamond.

We’ve also been able to hone our design skills in creating engagement ring design that best accommodates pear cut diamonds.
