A round brillaint cut and a pear cut diamond.
Round vs pear cut diamonds
We wanted to know, if you were going to buy a diamond that had exactly the same characteristics other than the cut, would there be a difference in price?
That is, if you were going to buy a 0.75ct diamond, same Colour, Clarity and quality of Cut,(aka the 4c’s) do you get more for your money if you go for a round brilliant cut stone, or a pear cut diamond?
It’s a tricky one to predict, I really dont know. I’m tempted to look at it through the point of view of supply and demand, fewer diamonds are cut into pear shapes so maybe they will be more expensive, however, demand for round brilliant cuts is always higher, so if supply isn’t keeping up with demand they will be more expensive.
For this test, we used diamond finders from online diamond retailers that you can easily find online.
The parameters are:
Carat weight: 0.75ct,
Colour: E,F,G colour,
Clarity: VVS2 - VS1 clarity,
Cut, Symmetry,Polish: Excellent/good
Fluorescence: Non
Round v Pear cut diamond price comparison.
Result: Pear cut diamonds cost less
On almost all the websites we used, we had more difficulty in finding pear-shaped stones and had to extend our parameters. We did our best to keep the colour and clarity the same and extended the parameter for the cut, polish and symmetry from and here are our results.
Round and pear cut diamond rings.
As you can see from the tables above, round brilliant cut diamonds were more expensive than pear cut diamonds, by some distance. We compared 10 diamonds, 5 round and 5 pear-cut diamonds, 2 from each website we used, so it’s by no means an exhaustive study.
We also cross-checked these findings with a high-end diamond retailer to see if this difference was reflected there too.
The high-end jewellery retailer we used didn’t give an exact comparison, only a guide based on the diamond size. We had to switch things up a bit because we couldn’t find a pear-cut diamond ring in a size below 1.00 so we compared diamonds in the 1-1.49ct range for both round and pear-cut diamonds.
Round brilliants start at £11,400 whereas pear cuts start from £10,500 indicating again that comparable pear cut diamonds will cost less.
So to conclude, pear-cut diamonds of the same colour, clarity, size and quality of cut are less expensive than round stones.
