Different Halo Styles

Halo rings are one of the most popular engagement ring styles at the moment. A traditional halo ring features a central diamond surrounded by a ring, or halo, of small diamonds. But did you know there are actually different halo styles?

Single Halo

Single halo ring

A single halo ring is the traditional halo ring mentioned above: a centre diamond with one circle of smaller diamonds or other gemstones surrounding it. The smaller stones will be placed tightly together, wrapping around the centre stone. The smaller stones or the centre stone might not be a diamond, in order to create a colour contrast. This was done beautifully on Olivia Wilde’s halo engagement ring, which featured a central stone surrounded by small emeralds. Alternatively, Kate Middleton’s famous engagement ring features a central sapphire surrounded by diamonds.

Double Halo

A double halo is very similar to a single halo, except that rather than only having one halo of gemstones surrounding the centre stone, it has two. Again, this is a great opportunity for colour contrast, as each halo might be a different colour gemstone.

Triple Halo

A triple halo ring will have, you guessed it, three circles of diamonds surrounding the centre stone. These rings are often less popular than single or double halos, but can draw attention with their unique design. The main drawback of a triple halo ring is that dirt and debris can easily accumulate in all the nooks of each layer, which can be difficult to clean.

Hidden Halo

Hidden halo rings are a unique design in that, from a first glance looking down at the ring, they seem like an ordinary solitaire. However, hidden beneath the centre diamond is a halo, which wraps around the bottom of the setting below the diamond. This again poses a great opportunity for colour contrast, not only between gemstones, but the metals used for the setting and the rest of the ring.

Star Halo

A halo ring need not be circular at all. Aside from having a choice in the cut of the centre diamond, be it a pear or emerald halo ring, the diamonds in the halo can also be used to create a star pattern. Whereas other halo rings feature only one size diamond in the halo, the star halo alternates two sizes of diamond to create a star-like effect.

Metal Frame Halo

Sometimes, halos are formed into other shapes, regardless of whether the centre stone is round or oval. This is done by creating a frame of metal, in which the halo diamonds are placed. One popular shape to use is the octagon, which creates a striking and unique piece that simultaneously balances the blending of diamonds with the main diamond and creating a contrasting shape to enclose the gem

Floral Halo

Unsurprisingly, the floral halo imitates the shape of a flower. This is done by surrounding the centre diamond with smaller, round diamonds. The metal around them then rises and falls over their curves in order to give the impression of a flower.

Floating Halo

Until now we have been looking at flush halos, in which a centre diamond sits flushed within the halo itself. In a floating halo, the diamond is separated from the halo and held above it by prongs.

Twisted Halo

A twisted halo ring is a flush halo ring in which the halo is created by separating rows of diamonds with thin bands of metal that curve around the halo to create a twisted effect. This is a very unique ring that creates a dramatic display of sparkle.
