The pear cut diamond in this ring is a 1.8ct and the two baguettes 0.25ct each making the total carat weight of this engagement ring design over 2.25ct
Pear and baguette-cut diamond engagement ring
Pear cut diamonds are an excellent choice for the central stone in a 3 stone diamond engagement ring. Baguettes are also popular and most of the time these stones will be oriented one of two ways, vertically or horizontally.
Pear and baguette-cut diamonds share an elongated form however they are different types of cut. A pear cut diamond is a brilliant-cut whereas a baguette-cut is a step cut, with fewer, but large individual facets.
Pears can be found in sizes from 2 x 3mm up to very large diamonds however baguettes cut diamonds rarely exceed 0.50ct. They are often seen in very small sizes and larger rectangular diamonds are normally cut into an emerald-cut which is similar to a baguette except it has 8 sides instead of 4.
Baguette diamond setting
Baguette-cut stones can be set one of three ways, rub over, bar or claw set. Rubover setting and bar settings are considered the best way of setting baguette-cut diamonds as they protect the corners of these stones which are the most likely part to chip.
Straight or tapered baguettes?
Baguette-cut diamonds can be either straight or tapered. Tapered baguettes are wider at one end than they are the other. When tapered baguettes are used as the side stones in a 3 stone ring, they are usually orientated horizontally and the wider end of the stone is towards the centre of the ring.
It is unusual to find tapered baguettes arranged vertically though it is possible.
Pear diamond setting
Pear cut diamonds can be set in either a rub over or claw setting and almost always have 3 claws, one at the top and two at the bottom. Some very large pear cut gemstones will have more than 3 but it is never advisable to have any less.
The claw at the top of a pear-cut stone should be a v-claw as this helps to protects the delicate tip of the stone as well as stopping it from coming out at either side.
Comfort fit shank
To make the ring more comfortable to wear, the inside of the shank (the part of the ring that goes around the finger) is curved and polished. The extreme smoothness of a highly polished finish helps the band to slide effortlessly onto the finger and the curve means that it’s a gentle curve rather than sharp edges that engage with the skin.
